The modal analysis and numerical investigation of engine-to-slip dynamics of a street motorcycle have been carried out by means of an advanced previously validated multibody model. The code is able to simulate all the most important vibration modes involved in engine-to-slip dynamics, e.g. pitch, bounce, hop, transmission and tyre carcass modes. The relationship between the ETSTF and the TC feasibility has been discussed, and results which hold valid regardless of the specific controller implemented have been derived. The effect of speed, engaged gear ratio, road-tyre friction, and sprocket absorber stiffness on ETSTF (thus on TC) have been discussed and guidelines given. The influence of suspensions' stiffness, tyres radial and tangential stiffness, and rear wheel spin inertia has been found to be not relevant. For the motorcycle considered, the practical bandwidth of TC would hardly exceed 7-10 Hz, this limit being related to the shape of the ETSTF. In particular, the TC design reveals to be more critical in operating conditions such as low speeds, high gear ratio, and high road grip. In addition, it has been found that the increment of sprocket absorber stiffness makes the ETSTF control less demanding, without significantly affecting other aspects of vehicle dynamics. Finally, the work gives useful results about the structure of the ETSTF by showing its pole-zero map: this is helpful if one wants to identify the plant by experimental tests.
