EB welding of heavy section steels for the fabrication of large structures has been made possible by the development of a mobile, local vacuum electron beam welding system with a high-power, reduced-pressure electron gun. The 60kW equipment has been designed to produce welds at a pressure significantly higher (0.1 to 1mbar) than used in conventional in-chamber EB welding machines (-10- mbar) and in consequence can be applied using a local mobile seal with good tolerance to leaks and, out-gassing. In parallel with this study, work has been carried out to address the issue of achieving adequate weld metal and HAZ fracture toughness (heat-affected zone) in EB welds made using the system in thick section C-Mn structural steel grades typical of material used in the construction of offshore structures. The application of the welding process will be described and details of the mechanical properties achieved in welds in the thickness range 50-80mm compared with the relevant offshore construction specifications.
