Quality requirements of vehicle suspensions are rising continuously. On the one hand, premium technical performance is requested, on the other hand tolerances are enlarged in order to reduce costs. In this area of conflict there is a high benefit in getting early and continuously information about how tolerances affect the quality of an assembly, respectively what tolerances are required to meet the desired performance. The Adam Opel GmbH established a method that allows analyzing the impact of tolerance variations on the technical performance of assemblies i.e. for vehicle suspensions. The presented procedure to analyze tolerances consists of three steps: Analysis of Sensitivity; Analysis of Robustness; Synthesis of Tolerances. For that purpose simulation is used to show the changes of performance with the variation of geometry points respectively the modification of characteristics of components. By this, geometry points and characteristics can be identified that have a big impact on the performance of the assembly. In this case, the assembly is sensitive to tolerances. Based on a statistical approach, minimal tolerances can be established that are required to ensure a proper function. On the other hand this method can be applied to identify technical requirements that drive tight tolerances. Widening the bandwidth of these target values provides the chance to enlarge tolerances and thus reduce costs of the assembly.
