Aluminium and Magnesium have seen increased use in automobiles and are poised for continued growth driven by lightweighting and its beneficial effect on fuel economy. Future growth will be driven by reducing the cost of sheet and extrusions in their primary forms and by developing secondary fabrication methods that minimize engineered scrap and minimize the need for multiple stampings that require extensive expensive joining. Enhancing their formability and total rate of manufacturing thus remain critical. On the casting front, alloys and processes are required that can produce mass effcient components with high toughness to enable their application in primary load paths. This requirement will drive processing that reduces casting wall thickness while increasing their complexity, which will enable manufacturing efficiency. New alloys that do not require expensive solution heat treatment will be desirable in this regard. Finally, efficient joining methods for the various mixed materials and product forms will be crucial to delivering the most cost effective structural subsystems. It is expected that computational-based methods will play an important role in the development of these materials and processes.
