The methods of ground-based testing and mathematical modeling of the nanomaterial degradation processes under the space environment effects may differ significantly from the similar aproaches used for studying conventional materials for space applications. By now, a number of software packages has been developed that enable to simulate various nanostructures by building them from individual atoms and molecules and to determine some physical properties of created nanostructures. Approaches to mathematical simulations of space environment effects on nanomaterials exist among which the software packages developed at SINP may be used. The laboratory facilities existing at SINP for studying the changes in spacecraft materials and instrumentation properties under the influence of high energy electron and proton beams, space plasma, and high-velocity solid particles of natural and artificial origin allow carrying out similar research on nanostructured materials. Some of the equipment may also be used for surface modification of various materials with nanostructured materials
