This article will review some of the exciting new developments regarding the use of nanomaterials in energy conversion and storage devices for space power applications. In particular, the growth and characterization of epitaxially grown InAs quantum dots will be presented. The performance of GaAs-based crystalline solar cells containing InAs quantum dots is highlighted and discussed in relation to their potential for further enhancement of multijunction solar cells. Significant progress has been achieved in relation to the synthesis, purification, and characterization of single- and multi-wall carbon nanotubes and their use in devices such as lithium ion batteries, PEM fuel cells, and polymeric solar cells. These materials are being used in concert with a variety of other nanomaterials (e.g., II-VI, III-V, Si, and metallic nanocrystals or quantum dots) to further improve device efficiencies and performance. A particular focus in this article will be given to the potential improvements to specific power and ancillary device behavior enhancements, such as thermal stability and radiation tolerance, which is beneficial to space applications and are afforded through the use of nanomaterials.
