A task-shared current control structure for multiphase DC/DC-converters was developed and implemented in a prototype system. The behaviour of multiphase converters is analysed based on the average switch modelling method. The influence of disturbances and inequalities on the phase currents is discussed. Simulation of the proposed control structure shows a robust phase-current behaviour, which was verified with experimental results. An approach for modelling switching losses based on a modified averaged switch modelling method was introduced. Crucial control theory issues of averaged current mode controlled multiphase converters were discussed considering the transfer function characteristics of the open-loop control system. The proposed modelling method and the control structure were investigated experimentally at a digital controlled prototype converter. The task-shared control structure showed an improved phase-current balancing performance in comparison to a typical multiphase current control structure. The application of the task-shared control structure leads to better phase-current balancing and thus to better ripple cancellation, lower component stress and better EMI behaviour (electromagnetic interference).
