The article introduces the ongoing development of collision mitigation and collision avoidance systems. First the brake system requirements for brake assist and advanced driver assistance systems are described. Then the article describes the accelerated brake force build-up of current brake assist systems which depend only on the drivers brake pedal actuation. In the next step, the advantages ofutilizing distance measurements from sensors such as 77 bGhz radar or lidar in modern collision mitigation systems are shown. These systems still have limitations and usually need a confirmation by the driver's reaction. As a third step, the paper describes the improved environmental detection by fusion ofbeam and camera sensors compared to only beam sensor based systems. On this improved environmental perception, a more sophisticated collision mitigation strategy and in future also an autonomous collision avoidance strategy is possible. Continental has equipped a test vehicle with an ARS300 radar and a CSF200 camera system, an electronically controllable brake system, a fusion algorithm and a brake strategy for collision avoidance. The paper illustrates the performance ofthis autonomous active brake system at relative speeds between 20 and 110 kph.
