Friction and wear are basic processes that determine reliability and durability of wheel - rail pair elements. These processes are influenced by many factors, that can be divided into material properties and working conditions. In this paper some results of laboratory wear tests have been presented. Tested material is a medium-carbon, bainitic steel. Friction and wear tests have been carried out on a modified Timken wear testing machine, in sliding conditions. The purpose of the investigations was to determine the influence of maximum Herzian pressure, and speed of specimens made of the tested material on their wear rate and to analyse possibilities of application of this material for rails. Also wear mechanisms have been studied by macroscopic and optical microscopic observations. The test results have been utilized to work out an empiric equation. This equation enables the influence of test parameters on wear of the tested steel assessment. The calculated wear rates have been compared with ones for a pearlitic rail steel.
