Steel selected for the submarine hull must satisfy very strict mechanical and corrosion properties. It must withstand high cyclic and dynamic loading in the seawater environment. In this regard, fatigue crack growth rate and stress corrosion properties were evaluated of a submarine hull steel. Fatigue crack growth test on CT (compact tension type) samples was carried out at room temperature as per ASTM E647. Sample(s) were first pre-cracked as per standard and further tested at R=0.1 and f=10 Hz; where R is Pmin/Pmax, and f is frequency. The results shows that the KIC was in the range of 80 MPa0.5 to 83 MPa0.5. Stress Corrosion Testing was carried out at a slow Strain rate of approx. 1x10-6/sec in sea water. The time to failure was reduced due to stress corrosion.
