An approach for evaluation of the crosswind behavior of vehicles developed at the Research Institute for Automotive Engineering and Vehicle Engines Stuttgart (FKFS) is presented. Basic idea is to provide a rating that correlates to the driver's subjective assessment when driving under natural stochastic crosswind. With current evaluation approaches like passing a crosswind facility this cannot be achieved for all vehicles. The presented approach takes into account the interaction between driver and vehicle emphasizing an evaluation of the driver's steering characteristics when compensating for crosswind. The matter comprehends both vehicle aerodynamics and driving dynamics. The well defined external excitation enables a data analysis in frequency domain which was found to be a powerful tool for evaluating the driver's behavior and the impact on his subjective assessment allowing the definition of a set of explicit assessment criteria. Moreover, the driver's behavior in the closed loop and his adaptation to different vehicles can be predicted since different drivers act very similar when driving under natural stochastic crosswind. Based on that knowledge a virtual driver was developed which allows an entirely simulation-based assessment of the crosswind behavior. The presented assessment approach provides an example of how to incorporate human behavior into vehicle dynamics simulation. With the resulting tool a step towards virtual vehicle development is accomplished. Though testing will not be completely replaced in the near future and the amount of physical testing may even increase the use of simulation based methods, like the presented approach, may help to limit the time and cost demands.
