The authors built up a test rig in cooperation with Rolls-Royce Deutschland for the rotor dynamic behaviour investigation and optimisation of the supercritical TP400 Low-Pressure-Spool. This is the aero engine of the transport aircraft A400M. The test rig is equipped with dummy rotor very similar to the engine spool and bearings with squeeze film dampers (SFD). The test rig was built up to investigate mainly the non-linear behaviour of the rotor-bearing-system under extreme operating conditions like out of balance of the shaft and the turbine, oil of conditions, gyroscopic effects and additional tests. After the balancing of the LP-spool will start the test runs. The spool is very good balanced in the face of the static run out of the LP-shaft. The next steps are the investigation of the unbalance sensitivity at the LP-shaft and the behaviour for high unbalances at the turbine. After the realisation and calculation of all tests, the test rig will be modified by a replacement of the SFDs by piezoelectric actuators. The comparison of both damping principles at a full scale test rig spool will be allowed a conclusion to the usability of piezoelectric actuators at aero engines.
