Modern vehicle-body design in relation to vibration comfort and acoustics entails an interplay of need relating the vehicle safety, installation-space concept, feasibility and efficient use of resources. The new A4 was depicted as a virtual prototype throughout the development process. A Master Model Process was developed within Function Design in order to enable constant synchronisation of all functions. Vehicle design in relation to vibrational comfort must basically ensure that excitation from outside and the vehicle itself causes only small acceleration at the points of contact between occupants and vehicle. These points are foremost the steering wheel, footwell and the seats. In terms of safety visual perception, these points include the display elements and rear-view mirror. Since the body brings the subsystems together, its global stiffness has a considerable impact on the overall systems, while the steering column and seats are subsystems which are particularly significant in terms of comfort. The use of a rigorous virtual process to produce its holistic design resulted in a lightweight concept that creates the optimal conditions for well-balanced vibrational comfort and customer-suited interior acoustics.
