TOPTIG is a new welding process to comply the requirements of the assembly of the very thin sheets in robotics. The development is supposed to improve TIG on the robot with the objective of the TIG quality combined with the MIG productivity. The key part of the technology is an original torch concept: The wire feed is oriented in an angle close to the tungsten electrode traversing the gas nozzle. This configuration provides the advantage of reduced overall dimensions and enhanced accessibility of the torch for robotic welding of complex geometries. There is no need to keep constant the torch and wire feed orientation versus the joint axis, then to liberate in that way the 6th axis of the robot. Several technical features are associated to the new torch design such as an automatic electrode change and a push pull wire feeder. Applications have been developed for the weld-brazing of galvanized thin sheet with CuSi3 wire without spatter: Other applications can be found in welding stainless steel or aluminium: food industry, manufacturing of furniture or cycle production.
