Silicon Carbide has a host of desirable properties making it suitable for many demanding applications in aerospace and defense. A number of advances have been made over the past decade or so in the area of SiC ceramic processing encompassing a significant range in processing approaches. These include hot pressing, hot isostatic pressing, pressureless sintering, liquid phase sintering, chemical vapor deposition, chemical vapor composite deposition, reaction bonding, microwave-assisted reaction bonding, and reaction hot pressing. The microstructures resulting from these various processes affect the properties achieved, and hence, the applicability for certain applications. Grain size, shape and distribution, grain boundary composition, secondary phases and porosity are all typical factors in determining how intrinsic properties of a material are translated into final achieved properties. In this paper, recent advances in SiC processing technology and microstructural development will be covered.
