Steel pipe piles have been widely used as the structural materials for marine steel structures. Various kinds of corrosion protection methods have been applied to prevent these steel structures from corrosion. One of protective coating methods, epoxy mastic coating, has been employed to prevent corrosion of steel structures. The main objective of this study is to investigate the protective effectiveness and durability of epoxy mastic coating for steel pipe piles. A large-scale and long-term field exposure test of 20 years for steel pipe piles has been carried out. The field test facility applied is a 427-m long pier extending perpendicular to the shoreline into the sea of Kashima-nada at Kamisu, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. The pier is constructed using 47 steel pipe piles. Two piers of these are protected by means of epoxy mastic coating in an atmospheric zone. The insulation resistance and the force of adhesion of the epoxy mastic coating have been maintained for 20 years. No rust was present in the surface of the steel pipe pile. These results demonstrate that protective effectiveness of epoxy mastic coating has been maintained for 20 years in an open sea environment.
