The reliability of the integrity assessment of a pipeline depends on a large degree on the reliability of the input data delivered by inspection. In the present paper in-line inspection tools (MFL pigs, Ultrasonic tools) are compared, regarding their ability to measure the flaw geometry and the number of defects accurately. In-line inspection by intelligent pigging is thought to be the most efficient way to inspect the complete pipeline quickly, completely and with the smallest possible interruption of the production process. The more precise inspection data will allow for a less conservative assessment with ramifications on the allowable operating pressure the inspection interval and other needs on integrity assessment. For some types of flaws it is suggested to improve the accuracy of the inspection methods or to combine inspection results. This combination of inspection results may go beyond the usual data analysis of inspection results. The other input parameters for reasonable assessment, i.e. loading conditions and material parameter are equally important, but often not available with a comparable degree of reliability.
