In the latest European regulations for the crashworthiness of railway vehicles new criteria for overriding constraints have been introduced. Nevertheless, the acceptance criteria for overriding are different in both regulations. In the latest version the standard EN 15227 (European Norm) the proof for the absorption of the energy is additionally required. A new design proposal is described that fulfills the more stringent offset criterion imposed in the EN 15227. Numerical analyses show that the new design proposal is able to guarantee sufficient and controlled energy absorption and to maintain the survival space required. Dynamic testing of these anti-climb units under several offset conditions has reconfirmed the results of the several numerical analyses. The validation has shown that the numerical model is able to capture the different design collision scenarios. Furthermore, steel absorbers with energy absorption capacity have been tested in order to investigate the effect of a vertical offset of 40 mm. The requirements of deformation length, force level and energy absorption capacity have been fulfilled for a special steel absorber configuration.
