Trucks especially carry large and varying amounts of load, which result in higher centers-of-gravity and therefore greater roll motions compared to passenger cars. Since accidents involving large vehicles cause great damage to motorists and pedestrians, understanding the dynamics of these vehicles is highly important. This paper describes an experimental study conducted using an actual large-sized truck with or without a load to analyze the effect of varying center-of-gravity height on the dynamic characteristics of the vehicle. Both dynamic and static experiments were conducted for better understanding of how the vehicle behaves in realistic driving situations. First, magnitudes and delays of various vehicle variables were examined. Also, simulation results from a 3DOF vehicle model were compared to the experiment results to determine whether it is a sufficient representation of a large-sized vehicle for situations in which experiments with an actual vehicle are not possible. From the static and dynamic experiments with a 25-ton truck under various load conditions, the following conclusions regarding its motion characteristics and the effects of the load condition can be reached. The roll angle with respect to the lateral acceleration increases with the amount and the loading height of the load. Also, the roll angle is greater when the truck is steered suddenly in a lane-change situation than in a steady-state. The frequency response data for the roll rate has a great amount of scattering in the unloaded state.
