The curing of high quality coatings with UV light is an ecoefficient coating technology. The dominating applications are wood and graphics where mainly transparent films are applied on flat substrates. 3D-parts are difficult to coat with UV-materials because of the strong dependency between curability and a short lamp-to-coating distance. Developments for automotive clear coatings on metal also include the development of 3D-UV applications. Mainly dual cure coating concepts combining thermal crosslinking at temperatures of more than 130 degree Celsius with UV curing are at the state of the art. Improved dual cure coatings crosslinkable at ambient temperatures and new one-pack-coatings UV-cured in carbon dioxide atmosphere allow further perspectives tor the efficient and high performance coating of 3D-plastic parts. The curing of high quality coatings with UV light is an ecoefficient coating technology. The ecoefficiency and quality aspects of the UV curing of coatings under ambient temperatures will be transferred into new applications like the coating of more plastic parts of automotives, where drawbacks as the narrow lamp to surface distance are overcome. An important progress here is the development of practicable technologies für the UV curing of three dimensional object surfaces under inert gas atmosphere like carbon dioxide. Furthermore the improvement of dual cure systems is helpful to get excellent surface qualities and to save solvent and energy. A low viscous isocyanto acrylate was recently developed für such uses. New mono cure coatings should give still higher efficiency perspectives also für high scratch resistant 3D plastic surfaces because of the possibility to transfer traditional benefits from flat line applications. Curing on demand is an ideal scenario für UV curable multilayer foils as back forming foils or adhesive foils resulting high quality surfaces avoiding 'wet' coating technologies.
