In order to improve the scratch resistance of coatings for car bodies and automotive plastic parts, the paint industry and the raw material suppliers are developing new technologies, either based on the conventional chemistry or with new, inorganic coatings. This paper shows a systematic study on scratch resistance (methods and appropriate evaluation) and a comparison of 2-component PUR conventional (ranging from elastic to hard systems), 2-component PUR (inorganic modified) and inorganic coatings. The major focus of the study is scratch resistance; however, other properties, such as chemical and solvent resistance, are discussed as well.
