Europe's railways are in the course of change. Proceeding from the liberalisation efforts of European transport policy, an intense discussion is going on within the national railway systems concerning the question of the unity of the network and operations. It needs to be considered in this context that an economic optimum of the overall system is required for the railways' competition with other modes of transport. This excludes partial optima for individual partners in the roles played. Especially the examples from everyday operations show that the technically integrated system is an essential prerequisite for the economic effectiveness and thus the future viability of the railway traffic system.
