Pipeline integrity is a broad process in which continual condition monitoring, assessment, evaluation, and repairs mitigate integrity threats to pipeline fitness for service. Almost all pipeline segments traverse sensitive areas where the consequence of failure is prohibitive. NOVA Chemicals operates several ethylene pipelines ranging in size from NPS 4 to NPS 12, in the heartland of Alberta, Canada. The integrity of these pipeline segments is vital to the continued economic success of the NOVA Chemicals Joffre petrochemical site. The NPS 12 Ethylene Mainline runs from the Joffre site to Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. Built in 1978, the line is 176 km (109.6 miles) long and is coated with a double wrap of polyethylene tape. The pipeline has never had an operational nor hydro-test failure. This paper will focus on key elements of the NOVA Chemicals Pipeline Integrity Management Plan and summarize the 2004 high-resolution in-line-inspection and follow-up investigation of the NPS 12 Ethylene Mainline.
