Active safety systems are designed to help the driver to avoid accidents or, if an accident is unavoidable, to mitigate accident severity. Developing these systems, MCG pursues the so-called integrated safety philosophy which aims at enhancing safety within all phases leading up to and following an accident. Accident causation analyses, the starting point of the development process, disclose four major types of accidents that have to be given high priority in order to reduce fatalities and severe injuries in road traffic: Loss of control accidents, accidents with oncoming or parallel traffic, intersection accidents and pedestrian accidents. Loss of control accidents account for most of the fatal accidents and proof is given that their number was reduced significantly by ESP. Furthermore, it could be shown that BAS contributes to reducing pedestrian accidents. Regarding accidents with oncoming or parallel traffic there already is a number of systems that build a complete chain addressing all phases preceding an accident, i.e. from supplying information during normal driving up to autonomous intervention in case of an imminent crash. New sensors such as cameras or short range radar providing information of the vehicle's surrounding will allow to enhance the current systems and further connect them to an effective system as a whole. Driver assistance systems aiming at reducing the number of intersection accidents require more technological progress especially in sensor technology and thus are still a subject of research.
