Active headlamps represent a new generation of headlamps which will revolutionize conventional lighting technology by means of new, active, assisting headlamp beam patterns. For the first time ever, the design conflict between high illuminance and low glare has been resolved, resulting in increased traffic safety. The paper presents the details of an experimental active headlamp system which has been implemented in a test vehicle and successfully tested under real traffic conditions. The system consists of two blocks: a sensor signal processor which generates a list of detected objects as CAN-bus messages at the output of the post-processor, and a control computer which assesses the current traffic situation as an interpretation of the object list, performing on this basis the adaptive headlamp control via the CAN-bus. The aim of the investigations was to evaluate the characteristics of the photometric system taking technical and psychological aspects into account. One major evaluation task concerned the estimation of the potential benefit of the system in traffic at night. The estimation of the influence of the active beam pattern on other road users formed a second evaluation task. One major point in this area was to avoid glare on the oncoming traffic. For the evaluation of the subjective judgement of the system 21 non expert test subjects were given the opportunity to drive a test vehicle fitted with the active light system. Both the technical tests and the results of the survey of test subjects confirmed the reliability of the system even in very complex traffic situations. One critical point in the realization of the active light function is the insufficient range of the environment sensors currently available. Progress in this field will sgnificantly increase the potential of active light systems in the future.
