The principal components of a vehicle powertrain are the transmission, the internal combustion engine and the axle system. The targets for transmissions are becoming progressively more demanding. Development work on the internal combustion engine and associated legislative requirements have yielded increasingly high engine torques and coolant temperatures, the latter being due to increasingly stringent demands on vehicle emission levels and fuel efficiency. During the product creation process several simulation and calculation tools are used. Most of them are applied simultaneously. The paper provides an overview of some of the modern computer-assisted development tools employed during the development phase of modern transmission products. The paper goes on to illustrate commercially avaliable tools as well as ZF-specific development tools. These are used to meet the demands of the transmission development process. A large number of development fields and the specific tools will be explained (Powertrain Simulation with component calculation, RealTimeWorkshop, Calculation of torsional vibrations, Road Simulation, Stress analysis, Fatigue calculation tools, Structural FEM optimization, Calculation tool for fuel economy, Dynamic simulation of vehicle cooling System, Numerical 3D-flow Simulation (CFD), Simulation of the heat treatment process, Solidification Software for casting processes). Each method will be described briefly, followed by a comparison of calculation/simulation results and some measurements.
