The aim of the presented study was to analyze the potentials of two different drive line concepts. The comparison is made for a simple Power Split Drive and a Hydrostatic Two-motor Transmission with a disconnectable hydromotor. The main focus is put on the achievable overall efficiency of both alternatives. The system complexity of the two compared transmissions is very different. The analysis therefore also looks towards this matter and further makes an assessment of the different control requirements. This paper has presented a number of aspects which must be considered when comparing drive line systems for off-road vehicles. The objective of this study was to compare the proven concept of the Power Split Drive with a fully hydrostatic alternative, the so called Multiple Motor Concept. At first the system layout of both drive line systems was discussed and a reference vehicle was defined. On the basis of this, a simulation study was carried out to make an assessment of the efficiency behavior of the two proposed alternatives. As the results show the complex Power Split Drive line system can reach better efficiencies than the much simpler Multiple Motor Concept Still the efficiencies calculated for the MMC are much better than those for a drive line featuring a hydrodynamic converter. Therefore the MMC is a true alternative for conventional drive lines. The installation effort for the Multiple Motor Concept is much smaller than that for the Power Split Drive. While approximately the same sizes and number of hydrostatic machinery is needed, the requirements for mechanical gears are significantly lower. This leads to the statement that the Power Split Drive offers advanced system overall efficiency, but at the cost of high system complexity. While the MMC seems to be a suitable solution to build a simple and competitively efficient drive line system, some control aspects of the MMC are still uncertain.
