The purpose of the paper is to introduce a concept of universal (multi size) Fe (finite element) model, which can reduce the labour and time necessary to gather data required for a given problem of RCF (rolling contact fatigue) crack life modelling. The proposed model assures the possibility of using only one FE mesh for analysing the behaviour of a number of RCF coplanar crack sizes under moving contact load. With the use of this model the histories of SIF (stress intensity factors) based on the LEFM (linear elastic fracture mechanics) can be determined, which can be used later as a measure of the material fatigue effort for predicting the crack growth rate. The universality of the model consists in utilizing the fact that the LEFM SIF histories at the front of the given shape RCF crack do not depend on the absolute crack dimensions, but only on its size related to the size of the contact patch. This universality was achieved by introducing into the loading of the model the variable size of contact patch instead of building the separate models for various crack sizes. To evaluate the model and to check its correctness it was used for analysing the three sizes of the semielliptical RCF 'squat' type crack embedded in the section of rail. The results obtained in the form of the three modes of SIF histories are in the good agreement with that obtained earlier from the conventional way of modelling.
