The development of the Wartsila 4-stroke engine portfolio is guided by current and future needs in the marine and power plant industries. The needs include environmental aspects, installation and operational economy together with fuel choices, reliability and user friendliness. In order to meet these needs, the product portfolio has been streamlined and updated with new technologies. For advanced combustion control, new technologies have been created. Common rail technology has been developed for diesel engines running on heavy fuels, giving advantages in emissions and fuel economy. This technology has now been applied to several engine sizes and delivered to several customers. Additionally, new technologies have been developed for reduced NO(x) emissions, including both wet and dry technologies. For advanced engine performance, technologies have been developed to control the air flow into cylinders, resulting not only in optimum combustion performance but also in controlled thermal load of the engine components. The fuel choice spectrum has also been widened. In addition to heavy fuels and crude oils, bottom oils and emulsions can now be used as fuels in diesel engines. Various tests have been performed with bio fuels. Future market potential exists in blends of fossil and bio fuels. Technologies for using dual fuels and even triple fuels have been developed for applications where there are needs to shift between liquid and gaseous fuels. A complete portfolio of modular technologies has been developed to take care of the monitoring, control and safety needs these that new technologies have brought with them. The fact that Wartsila has now operations and maintenance responsibility for a large base of plants running worldwide has given an even deeper insight into aspects which are of primary importance for the engine user and operator. This has led to changes in some aspects of the maintenance focus.
