Although tyre/road noise has been subject to research during the last 30 years, the understanding of noise generation mechanism and the prediction of their contribution to the interior and exterior noise is still one of the most attractive fields inside noise control engineering. Different mechanisms are responsible for the generation of tyre/road noise at different frequencies depending on tyre parameters and road surface characteristics. In order to predict the contributions of different mechanisms models are necessary, taking into account the properties of tyres, the contact between tyre and road and the radiation from tyres including aerodynamic sources such as air-pumping. Today's models are certainly far from being complete, but they are focusing on most important effects for typical situations of interest. In this way they are suitable to predict at least trends when modifying tyre and road parameters. The paper gives an overview over different noise generation mechanisms and their modelling. Examples are given from ongoing work in modelling tyre/road noise generation with an outlook focusing on future developments.
