This paper presents simple approximate formulae for calculating the weight functions associated with cracks emanating from a notch under arbitrary loading. In aerospace the problem of ageing structures, and the increased use of fatigue life extension techniques, has focused attention on the need for rapid yet accurate tools for determining the stress intensity factors, and/or the crack tip opening displacement (CTOD), associated with cracks at a stress concentrator, hot tear, or a notch. In the rail industry to meet the anticipated increased demand for Australia's mineral exports, and still satisfy the national limits on axle loads, we need to reduce the weight of the vehicles used to transport the coal. The challenge is to achieve this goal without compromising safety or durability. To assist in meeting these challenges we have presented the weight functions for 2D and semi-elliptical cracks emanating from a notch. These weight functions are exact both for short cracks and for long cracks. This property is important since the fatigue life of a component is frequently dominated by the regime where the crack is growing from a small to a medium size crack so that accurate solutions for short to medium size cracks are required. On the other hand, it is also desirable to have an accurate knowledge of the residual strength of a cracked structure. This frequently requires a knowledge of the stress intensity factors associated with long cracks. The corresponding weight functions for quarter elliptical flaws emanating from a notch or a free surface will be presented in a subsequent paper.
