Ultracapacitors, also known as electric double layer capacitors (EDLC) are electrical energy storage devices, which offer high power density and extremely high cycling capability. Due to their high power density, their high cycling capability and mechanical robustness, ultracapacitors have a large potential in the automotive industry as future energy storage device. These features make EDLCs as an interesting powers sourcefor high power applications, such as electric power assisited steering, electric brakes, start-stop functionality of the internal combustion engine, hybrid launch assist, etc. Ultracapacitor modules have a large potential to be used in the automotive industry as future energy storage devices. Their reliability depends amongst others, on the cells operating voltage and therefore, for a specific application, on system design parameters. Typical design parameters for automotive ultracapacitor modules are: number of cells, cell capacitance, statistical distribution of individual cell parameters, cell balancing electronics, etc.. In order to qualify the effect of these parameters on the life expectancy of an ultracapacitor module for automotive application. Monte Carlo method has been applied to ultracapacitor simulation models. The advantages and disadvantages of different equalization concepts were discussed. It is shown that an equalization circuit with an actively switched resistor offers the best life expectancy. Depending on the manufacturing tolerance of the individual cell parameters an equalization with a passive resistor may be attractive as well. It is shown that without cell equalization, the individual cell self-discharge bandwidth is the most important cell design parameter affecting module life expectation. With the results obtained from these simulations, the design of 42V ultracapacitor modules with respect to cost and reliability becomes possible.
