This paper presents a fully active suspension system for railway vehicles, employed with the New Railway System Paderborn. While previously published works gave an overview of the system and the overall control structure, this paper will focus on the technical details of the suspension system in a vehicle. Special emphasis is laid on the kinematic structure of the system, which features a spatial four-bar parallel manipulator as linkage system. The link/cylinder arrangement is an easy way to realize a fully active suspension for railway vehicles. The kinematics of the system necessary for the control can be described by four-dimensional tables. The analysis shows that despite the overdetermination of the system the resulting cramping of the links stays small within the desired motion area of the carbody. Longitudinal and yaw movement caused by the links can be compensated for by the longitudinal cylinders using a control structure like the one presented.
