In March 2000, the superconducting magnetically levitated (maglev) transportation system in Yamanashi was evaluated by the Superconducting Maglev Technological Practicality Evaluation Committee of the former Ministry of Transport. Expected to serve as a super high-speed transportation system of next generation, this system was evaluated to establish a firm technical basis for improved practicality, based on the results of the operational tests that had been carried out at the Yamanashi Maglev Test Line since 1997. The maglev transportation system is currently undergoing operational tests in order to solve remaining problems such as ensuring system durability and reliability, reducing construction and operating costs, and improving the aerodynamic characteristics of the linear motor cars with the aim of achieving practical commercial operation. This report outlines the technological measures and devices used to solve these and other concerns as they relate to the new leading car (Mc5) of the system. Work on this car has been undertaken by both MHI and the Central Japan Railway Company from two kind of linear cars newly developed and manufactured this time, focusing on the major goal of improving the aerodynamic characteristics of the leading car. In addition, the smooth cooperation of the Nagoya Aerospace Systems Works and the Mihara Machinery & Transportation Systems Works (presently the Plant and Transportation Systems Engineering & Construction Center) achieved in manufacturing the leading car Mc5 in a short period of time has been an important issue within MHI. Therefore, this report also explains some of the various measures taken to facilitate cooperation among all concerned in the achievement of this work.
