The demand for electric power in vehicles has been steadily increasing. Limited by the belt transmission, the conventional alternator will no longer be able to cover this demand in the future. One solution is the starter-alternator which is located directly on the crankshaft of the combustion engine. Using this technique, a conventional starter and a conventional alternator are replaced by only one electrical machine. Due to the location the starter-alternator has to be able to provide a high starting torque to start the engine. Once the combustion engine runs the machine works as an alternator to produce electric power. This paper deals with the design and the dynamic simulation of a starter alternator system based upon a reluctance machine, which is integrated into a car flywheel.
