The demand for electric power in vehicles has been steadily increasing. Limited by the belt transmission, the conventional alternator will no longer be able to cover this demand in the future. One solution is the starter-alternator which is located directly on the crankshaft of the combustion engine. Using this technique a conventional starter and a conventional alternator are replaced by only one electric machine. Due to the location the starter-alternator has to develop a high starting torque to start the engine. Once the combustion engine runs, the machine works as an alternator to produce electric power . Caused by the demand of the possibility to switch the machine off electrically, there are no permanent magnets within the rotor. The development of three different kinds of reluctance machines to come into operation as a starter-alternator are presented within this paper. In addition different variations of the most suitable machine are shown.
