It is possible to determine the configuration of the electronic total system of a vehicle by introducing a unique hardware and software ID for each electronic control unit (ECU) in connection with a unique DEVICE-ID. With the help of the system integrity protocol (SIP), developed at the Institute of Measurement Systems, the identification data of the employed controllers can be collected by a configuration master to achieve the current system configuration. The integrity of the electronic total system is ensured, if the current ystem configuration corresponds with one of the configurations stored in the data base, which is fed by the car manufacturer. The diagnosis of the electronic total system can be executed individually and thus substantially more efficiently, if the system properties are already known before the actual diagnosis starts. A successful check of the system integrity will strengthen the confidence of the vehicle users into the reliability of its vehicle.
