The authors have examined the impact of the increase in breakdown voltage for MOSFETs whilst still keeping in mind the challenge for achieving extremely low on-resistance devices to minimise overall power dissipation in future vehicle systems. The key applications driver for power semiconductors will be the integrated starter alternator where large volumes of extremely low on-resistance 75 V rated naked die will form a key part of the required enabling technology. Without successful development of ISA systems the 42 V market will not take off. Following ISA other high power, high current applications will follow suit, perhaps utilising improvements in standard discrete packaging where possible. SMART power devices will be modified to offer higher clamping voltages and other features such as PWM for 42 - 14 V driving of lighting systems. Sophisticated intelligent power controllers linked to the vehicles communications busses will be able to run directly off 42 V systems. Above all one of the key challenges will be to be able to manufacture these semiconductor solutions in high volume but at very low cost to enable 42 V systems to realise their full potential. The deployment of ISA systems to the mass market will ultimately drive power silicon costs down and make highly electrified fuel efficient, low pollution vehicles a reality for all.
