Aluminium-pigmented waterborne basecoats can be predeposited to effect deterioration during their use in circulation line. The diminished metallic effect is used to measure paint stability. Different methods to determine the circulation line stability are described and discussed, existing theories to improve circulation stability are investigated and further effects and mechanisms on degradation stability are proposed. Contrary to current thinking, the flake nature is not entirely responsible for the color shift. Interfacial interactions with other paint components are investigated and their impact on the color stability is proven.
