Waterborne basecoats allow application at low volume solids, thus producing optimum metallic effect while maintaining compliance with emission regulations. A novel aqueous microgel polymer particle has been developed to control rheology. Waterborne basecoats, combined with appropriate clearcoats, meet current automotive performance requirements for both rigid and flexible substrates. The selection of compatible, flexible primers is necessary to maintain unibase characteristics over a variety of plastic substrates. Processing is similar to solvent borne finishes with the exception that water must be removed before application of clearcoat. A curing temperature in excess of 230 F and preferably 250 F is necessary to achieve full performance.
