Driver and passenger safety continues to grow in importance in the automotive industry due to regulatory and market drivers. The increasing demands in airbag technology have challenged the material requirements to extreme levels. The performance requirements, coupled with the traditional environmental operating requirements associated with automotive, have pushed the demand for airbag cover materials exhibiting a specific set of critical and well balanced properties. The evolution of material and design solutions for the cover of the airbag system has been met thus far with thermoplastic olefin (TPOs), polyether-ester copolymer (COPEs), and styrenic block copolymer (SEBS, SBS) material offerings. The use of thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) has been limited due to the inability to address all critical airbag requirements with a single grade of material. However, recent material developments in the TPV area lend themselves to providing total airbag performance solutions and have proven to be very competitive with other materials applied in this application. This paper describes the development of a new series of Thermoplastic Vulcanizates (TPVs), specially designed for airbag covers. The new materials have proven to be very competitive with other materials in this segment due to its reliable performance in a broad temperature range.
