Thermoplastic elastomers have now penetrated automotive sealing systems due to their ability to offer weight reduction, ease of processing, recyclability, and long term sealing performance compared to traditional thermoset materials. Thermoplastic materials can also be specifically compounded to provide adhesion to a variety of materials including rubber, plastic, and metal. Thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) combinations allow for the design of innovative thermoplastic components in automotive sealing systems with multiple integrated functionalities. This paper describes the adhesion mechanisms of these materials as well as the existing laboratory techniques utilized to assess bonding performance. Potential applications for these novel materials in automotive sealing systems, such as corner moldings, glass run channels, attachment system, surface modification and tie layers for bonding metal to elastomeric profiles will be described in detail.
