Nanostructures, such as nano-layers, -dots, -composites, -fibres, -tubes, -cavities and -surfaces within or on top of a matrix material, promise great steps forward in performance and in functionality. This is also true for a lot of car components and applications such as the power train, energy conversion, wear behaviour, lightweight construction, surveillance control, pollution sensing, climate, passenger wellbeing and body design. These will meet the social demands relating to ecology, safety and comfort. In this presentation we will focus on ecological aspects driven by the future statutory requirements for reduced fleet consumption. An analysis shows that a 30 % improvement in roll resistance, air resistance, car weight or power train reduces fuel consumption by 4, 6, 15 and 28 % respectively. Some nano-related technological approaches aimed at components for alternative engines, wear reduction, energy conversion and lightweight construction are briefly described.
