This work is part of a larger project to look at the total design and analysis of a new design of helmet for improved perhipheral vision and comfort for use when driving a racing car. A key point in the project is the bespoke nature of the helmets. A digitalized image of the head is made that is then used to customize the helmet. Computational packages are then used to design the helmet, translate that image into geometry to be used within CFD and other analysis packages such as finite element analysis. Computational techniques can then be used to assess the improvement in terms of peripheral vision, safety and comfort in comparison with a standard helmet. This part of the project looks at the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to test designs for improved ventilation within the helmet cavity to ensure the even cooling or heating of the head whilst wearing the helmet. Initially the foam interior was modeled using different porosities values to simulate varying densities of foam.
