The focus of this work is to consider the advances possible in primary safety or accident prevention for a user when he/she is required to wear some form of head protection. The specific case of a full-face helmet worn by a race car driver is chosen by way of example, but the techniques developed and the approach used is transferable to any situation where head protection is worn. A key point in this project is the pursuit of a bespoke design specific to the user, and this implies additional benefits in secondary safety through the improved fit of the helmet. To this end a semi-automated computer aided design approach is developed on a parametric basis. Two principle areas considered for improvements in primary safety in this case are thermal comfort and peripheral vision for the driver. Thermal discomfort in hot weather and impaired vision are of course particularly relevant to many other examples of head protection e.g. conventional hard hats. For each helmet design an individual has his/her head digitized and this is used as the geometric basis for helmet surface generation. Computational packages are then used to generate the additional geometry specific to the users vision requirements and any cooling/ventilation considerations for the particular user environment proposed. CFD and other simulation packages such as finite element analysis are used to assess the improvement in terms safety and comfort in comparison with a standard helmet. Additionally animation packages are used to assess the improvements in peripheral vision.
