To meet today's need for a more quantitative approach in accelerated life testing, tailor-made laboratory tests have been developed for the qualification of the corrosion resistance of electronic components in automotive applications. By use of metallic copper as a meter for corrosivity, laboratory tests were designed to reproduce the in-service corrosion behavior of metallic copper in respect to extent of corrosion, composition of corrosion products, and rate limiting steps in the corrosion process. The test cycle designed for electronic components in an engine compartment is composed of the following steps: exposure for two hours to neutral salt spray, drying at 23 deg C and 50 % rel. humiditiy for 22 hours, exposure to a test atmosphere of 1.5 ppm NO2, 0.5 ppm SO2 at 25 deg C and 95 % rel. humidity for five days, and drying at 23 deg C and 50 % rel. humidity for one day. The predominating corrosion products of copper are Cu2O and Cu2Cl(OH)3 with a minor portion of sulphur containing corrosion products in the form of sulphates. In terms of corrosivity for copper, a test duration of six weeks corresponds to 7.5 years of exposure in the reference engine compartment environment selected for this study.
