The extremely high temperature associated with the first miles of the 18-inch flow-line of the Sable Offshore Energy Project near Venture required a change in the standard CP (corrosion protection) design. The new CP system developed for deployment on the sea bottom is designed for a 25-year life and consists of sacrificial anodes of aluminum which are attached to separate sleds electrically connected via steel cables to the flowline and jetted into the seabed for protection. Separating anodes from the hot pipe line and placing them above the seabed maximizes their efficiency. The sled design uses a rectangular frame of 26-inch pipe for basic support. Skirts on the bottom of the frame pipe are to penetrate the seabed and to enhance the stability. Steel deflection plates around the periphery of the sled and open fiber reinforced plastic grating are provided to prevent the anodes from damage by fishing gears. Skirts and jetting of the skirts and frame pipe into the seabed enhances stability by capturing a soil mass within the sled boundary and reduces the likelyhood of settlement-induced burial. The anode requirements on the sleds can more easliy be quantified and future addition of CP is easier compared to anodes on the hot pipe. Installation and connection of each sled took less than 24 h.
