It is important to evaluate the fracture initiation behaviors of linepipe subjected to a large scale straining by bending load, in the assessment of pipeline with local buckling under seisritic loading or ground sliding. In order to clarify the critical assessment procedure of linepipe subjected to large scale cyclic loading, at first in the present paper, the two-parameters criterion for ductile crack initiation has been discussed using small scale tensile test specimens with circumferential notch. The transferability of the criterion obtained by small scale tests to the assessment of ductile crack initiation of pipe with local buckling subjected to prebending, then, has been studied by using both the cyclic-bending tests of pipe and the numerical analyses of strain behaviors under prebending and reverse-bending. It is clarified that the critical safety assessment of ductile, crack initiation can be conducted based on the strain-based criterion by using FE-analysis of pipe under cyclic loading such as seismic load. This paper presented a estimating procedure of ductile crack initiation of pipe under cyclic loading based on the strain criterion obtained by small scale tension tests. The results give the suggestion to control the critical design for avoiding the leakage of gas pipeline under seismic loading for onshore pipeline or installing of offshore pipeline. The information and method given in the present paper is useful for improving material with the reasonable fracture resistance and for determining the proper sizing of linepipe.
