A Switched Reluctance Machine (SRM) offers many advantages in comparison to induction machines particularly concerning production costs, torque/weight ratio and operation under emergency conditions, so it is appropriate for propulsion in electric vehicles. In this paper the design of a SRM, based on finite element calculations and dynamic simulations is presented, considering three different pole-layouts. Relevant parameters for the machine design are explained and their influence on the produced torque is pointed out. Moreover, the influence of rotor skewing is examined by means of finite element calculations. Dynamic simulations have been carried out for the machine design producing the maximum torque for the described application. Optimal operation with high efficiency in the demanded speed range is ensured by examining the influence of different numbers of winding turns in combination with an investigation of the switching performance.
