There is a new market for electric motors in various applications in the automotive area. Electric motors for electric vehicles (EVs) can be taken from the bench in the development state of EVs, but for a series production they have to be newly designed since they have to have a high weak field range, a high power to weight ratio, high efficiency for high as well as for low loads according to the frequencies of power demand in city driving, and especially low production costs. Electric motors on the crankshaft in a hybrid vehicle can drive the vehicle as well as damp the shaft oscillation of the normal combustion engine. If they are mounted in wheels they must withstand high acceleration forces. These requirements lead to water- or oil-cooled induction and synchronous motors. Also the switched reluctance motor and the transversal motor are under discussion. These motors are compared with each other. The power sources for these electric motors are batteries, fuel cell systems or IC generator sets as in hybrid vehicles.
